Meet Jacquelyn Marie Butler. A bright-eyed\, brown-skinned young girl\, whose sudden transfer from a protective\, middle class late-1950s upbringing in Queens to a progressive\, predominantly-Jewish private school in Greenwich Village\, challenges her sense of self. Lively and poignant\, Queens Girl in the World tags along for a young woman’s journey of self-discovery\, at the onset of Civil Rights-era social change. \nFollowing the first act performance\, the museum will host Curated Thoughts. This essential conversation will feature the voices of the artists who created the work alongside real world perspectives that can speak to the realities of the play from Caleen Sinette Jennings (Professor of Theatre at American University)\, Treopia G. Scholars\, legislators and several Democratic presidential candidates have been vocal about the need to confront slavery’s legacy of socio-economic inequality. \nTom Hall will moderate an expert panel discussion that explores who would qualify\, what form they might take and who would decide. SUMMARY:Film: The Six Triple Eight (70 minutes)
DESCRIPTION:In February 1945\, the U.S. Army sent 855 black women from the Women’s Army Corps (WACs) to England and France to clear the backlog of mail in the European Theater of Operations.  The 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion\, known as the Six Triple Eight\, was the only all-black female battalion to serve in Europe during WWII. By war’s end\, the Six Triple Eight had cleared over 17 million pieces of backlogged mail ensuring the troops stayed in touch with their loved ones back home.
